hammock in the yardSustainable Irrigation begins with knowledge and ends with hassle-free watering! Your sprinklers should match your landscaping. You and your sprinkler system should enjoy a healthy working relationship without too much effort. Although automatic sprinkler systems are called “Automatic”, they are not totally “maintenance-free”. Heads Up Sprinkler Company believes that taking care of your sprinklers shouldn’t consume all of your free time.

How To Minimize Water Waste and Maintenance Time:
   •  Find the right frequency of visual inspections
   •  Recognize the varying watering requirements of the plants and grass in your yard
   •  Identify & correct the inefficiencies of your sprinklers
   •  When it’s time to call in the professionals, be sure they are licensed –– It’s the LAW!
And more importantly, licensed professionals know and understand how best to correct problems in your sprinkler system.

Here in Texas, sprinklers are a necessary part of healthy landscapes. A healthy yard is a very obtainable goal. The best way to reach that goal is to use your sprinkler system to the best of its ability. Sustainably, that means not overwatering and not wasting water. Sprinklers should not be used except to supplement rainfall.

THE MOST COMMON ISSUE WITH AUTOMATIC LAWN SPRINKLERS
IS OVERWATERING. It's very easy to correct, yet confusing until you recognize certain facts about plants, turf and sprinklers.

Some General Rules to Water by:
   •  Administer 1” of water a week
       –  the average pop-up head sprays 2”- 3” per hour, that means watering a total of
           30 minutes a week to deliver 1”
       –  the average rotor head sprays ½”-⅞” per hour, that means watering a total of 50
to 60 minutes a week to deliver 1”
   •  Our Clay soils absorb ¼” of water an hour
       –  stagger the watering cycles
       –  pop-up heads deliver ¼” in 8 to 12 minutes
       –  rotor heads deliver ¼” in 25 to 30 minutes
   •  Practice “Cycle & Soak”
       –  after the first Cycle runs, WAIT 1-2 hours,
       –  allow the water to Soak deeper into the soil
       –  run a second Cycle
   •  All Seasons are NOT the same
       –  use 50% water/time during colder months – when the temp averages 50°
       –  use 70% water/time during cooler months – when the temp averages 70°
       –  use 100% water/time during hotter months – when the temp averages 100°
   •  Know the Watering Requirements of your Plants
       –  try to grow plants with similar water requirements in the same watering station/zone
       –  under water until plants show stress, then in small increments, increase the time
       –  it’s easier to add more water than it is to take it back!
